Depression, the secret we share

Depression, the secret we share is a TedxMet Talk given by writer Andrew Solomon. He describes his battle with depression, and he reaches two insights, 1. depression is a secret everyone keeps, and 2. the more he openly talked about his depression the more people want to share theirs and by doing so, start a conversation destigmatizing mental health and various treatments.

This unraveling pamphlet format plays on the idea of a secret message to be shared and how depression can be an unassuming illness, like a square, until people start revealing and unraveling their struggles and stories. By choosing to share Solomon’s story in the format of an expanding note the message of his talk is visually revealed.

This work was displayed in an exhibition hosted by OCAD U. The Faculty of Design annually presents the Perspectives Exhibition in the Great Hall in October. This exhibition exposes first year students, prospective students and current students to the wide range of program options and work at OCADU. The exhibition features a variety of faculty and student works from Advertising, Environmental Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Illustration and Material Art & Design. My work was chosen to represent the Graphic Design Faculty.
